Edu Gaspar Steps Down as Arsenal Sporting Director

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu Gaspar, has resigned from his role, the club announced on Monday. Edu, who joined the club in 2019, played a pivotal part in Arsenal’s recent successes, including the appointment of Mikel Arteta as manager. His departure comes amid talks with Evangelos Marinakis, owner of Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos, for a new position in a multi-club group, sources revealed.

During his tenure, Edu led a cultural shift at Arsenal and was promoted to sporting director in 2022. His history with the club traces back to his playing days from 2001 to 2005, where he contributed to two Premier League titles.

In a statement, Edu expressed mixed emotions about leaving, stating, “This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people.” He also highlighted his friendship with Arteta and emphasized his ongoing support for the club.

Josh Kroenke, Arsenal’s co-chair, acknowledged Edu’s contributions, saying, “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his immense contribution.” He assured fans that the club remains focused on their goals and is prepared for this transition.

Edu’s exit coincides with Arsenal’s recent struggles on the field, including a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United. Arsenal currently stands fifth in the Premier League, trailing Liverpool by seven points. The team anticipates a morale boost with the return of captain Martin Ødegaard as they prepare for upcoming matches against Inter Milan and Chelsea.
