IPL Retention 2025 - Mumbai Indians Retain Star Players Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Mumbai Indians have confirmed they will keep their core group of players intact for the 2025 Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions will retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma ahead of the upcoming mega auction.

The decision comes as teams face the October 31 deadline to submit their retention lists to the IPL governing body. This move will cost Mumbai Indians at least 75 crore rupees from their total purse of 120 crore rupees.

With five capped players already retained, the franchise can only use their right-to-match option on an uncapped player during the auction. The exact payment to each retained player has not been disclosed.

The retention decision follows a disappointing 2024 season for Mumbai Indians, where they finished last in the league standings. The team faced controversy last season after Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, leading to fan protests at various venues.

Despite the leadership change backlash, Hardik proved his worth with strong performances in India’s successful 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. However, Suryakumar Yadav was later chosen to lead India’s T20 team after Rohit’s retirement from the format.

The IPL has set specific minimum deductions for retained players: 18 crore rupees for the first player, 14 crore for the second, 11 crore for the third, 18 crore for the fourth, and 14 crore for the fifth. Teams can adjust these amounts based on individual negotiations.

Sources indicate that Mumbai Indians’ management recently met with senior players to discuss future plans before finalizing the retention list. Under the IPL rules, teams can retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped internationals and two uncapped players.
