Miami QB Cam Ward Boosts Heisman Hopes in Duke Victory
Miami quarterback Cam Ward reignited his Heisman Trophy campaign Saturday, leading the No. 5 Hurricanes to a 53-31 win over Duke. The victory keeps Miami undefeated at 9-0 and solidifies Ward’s position as a top contender for college football’s most prestigious award.
Ward threw for 400 yards and five touchdowns, bouncing back from a quiet performance against Florida State last week. His stellar play helped Miami rack up 527 total yards and dominate time of possession.
”I just tried to stay focused and make the right reads,” Ward said after the game. “My teammates made some great plays out there.”
Wide receiver Xavier Restrepo had a record-breaking day, catching eight passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns. He surpassed Santana Moss to become Miami’s all-time leader in receiving yards.
Miami’s defense also shined, forcing four Duke turnovers and holding their rushing attack to just 77 yards.
Ward’s season stats now stand at 3,141 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and only six interceptions. These numbers, combined with Miami’s perfect record, have fans and analysts buzzing about his Heisman chances.
”Ward is playing at an elite level,” said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “He’s definitely in the Heisman conversation.”
While other players like Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and Colorado’s Travis Hunter are also in the mix, Ward’s position as quarterback for a national title contender could give him an edge.
Ward and the Hurricanes face Georgia Tech next week in another opportunity to bolster their playoff and Heisman aspirations.
